Overview 

The ACA offers skills courses and certification programs to paddlers of all skill levels. The courses represent sets of skills, safety procedures and other materials deemed appropriate for the particular environments of the disciplines. Choose one of the options below to learn more about skills courses and certification.

 

 

 ACA Kayak Courses

  • This course is a great introduction to whitewater kayaking. The first day is an introduction to rolling in flatwater, equipment choices, and outfitting you in the best gear. Next, we are off to the river for 2 days of easy class I and II paddling. This is an intensive workout where we will be practicing eddy turns, eddy hopping, ferrying, peel-outs, safety techniques, and river reading skills. Additional days are available.* This course will be taught by our ACA certified instructors.

    • Prerequisites: none
    • Required equipment needed includes full wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes, whitewater kayak, spray skirt, and paddle.
      Students are encouraged to bring their own personal gear, however Wave Trek Rescue has some gear available for classes—check availability.

  • This 5-day course is designed to give the working knowledge needed to start teaching the A.C.A. Kayaking program. Through the use of video and on water instruction you will develop the proficiency and confidence necessary to be a better paddler or instructor. ACA instructor certification granted to those approved by the instructor trainer.

    • Required equipment needed includes full wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes, whitewater kayak, spray skirt, and paddle.
      Students are encouraged to bring their own personal gear, however Wave Trek Rescue has some gear available for classes—check availability.

ACA Raft Courses

  • This 50+ hour intensive training program not only meets Washington State Guiding Laws but is now recognized and certified by the American Canoe Association. This course will give an in-depth understanding of water dynamics, water-craft handling, reading and navigating rapids and general on-the-water safety. Our Instructor Trainers have extensive whitewater and instructional experiences world-wide. In addition to teaching students about maneuvering on the river, they will also explore techniques and challenges of making a paddle crew out of novices (customers) and interactive guiding styles.
    Our instructors will go out of their way to make sure each student's goals are met and their river experiences are positive and fun. We will be working with each individual to reach his/her goals whether they are motivated to become a commercial raft guide or striving to be a competent private boater. We look forward to seeing you on the river!

      • Safety: To paddle White Water (Class III-IV) safely, perform self-rescue and respond to emergencies that arise.
      • Skills: To acquire the techniques, knowledge and skills needed to paddle a raft on whitewater.
      • Enjoyment: To become part of the boater community and develop friendships with like-minded adventurers.
    • Prerequisites: Being in good physical condition and having a basic ability to swim. No previous experience necessary.
    • Required equipment includes full wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes. Gloves and fins are optional.

  • This 5-day course is designed to give the working knowledge needed to start teaching the A.C.A. Raft Guide curriculum. Through the use of video and on-the-water instruction you will develop the proficiency and confidence necessary to be a better guide or instructor. ACA instructor certification granted to those approved by the instructor trainer.

    • Required equipment includes full wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, and booties or tennis shoes.

ACA Rescue Courses

  • Kayaking in whitewater can be a thrill, but there are some very real dangers that need to be prepared for. Getting some training is one of the best things you can do for yourself and those you boat with if you want to keep yourselves safe while out playing. For those who do not have the time for a 3-day course, this is an intensive one-day look at kayak rescue. You will learn about basic rope techniques, rescue jackets, group organization and much more.

    • Prerequisites include a basic ability to swim and familiarity with whitewater kayaking.
    • Required equipment includes wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes, hardshell kayak, spray skirt, and paddle. Students are encouraged to bring their own rescue gear to practice with.
    • Students are encouraged to bring their own personal gear, however Wave Trek Rescue has some gear available for classes—check availability.
    • Course Cost: $100
    • Course Dates: by request of groups of 6 or more
    • Course location: Index, WA
  • This 2 day course covers the latest in basic rescue techniques for boaters using a minimal amount of gear. We work on vertical pins, wrapped and broached boats, body and foot entrapments, safe swimming techniques and use of rescue jackets. Certified American Canoe Association instructors teach this course. The first day of class is classroom based and starts at 5 pm, while the following two days are on the water.

    • Prerequisites include a basic ability to swim and familiarity with whitewater kayaking.
    • Required equipment includes wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes, hardshell kayak, spray skirt, and paddle. Students are encouraged to bring their own rescue gear to practice with.

    • Course Cost: $290
    • Course Dates: by request of groups of 6 or more
  • This 4-day course is designed to give the working knowledge needed to start teaching the A.C.A. Kayak Rescue program. Through the use of video and on water instruction you will develop the proficiency and confidence necessary to be a better paddler, rescuer, or instructor. ACA certification granted to those approved by the instructor trainer.

    • Required equipment includes wetsuit or drysuit, a USCG approved life jacket, whitewater helmet, booties or tennis shoes, hardshell kayak, spray skirt, and paddle.
